Blended Learning

Johnston is one of 14 districts participating in FUSE RI, an initiative designed to advance blended learning across the state. Blended learning is a term used to describe the strategic integration of face-to-face instruction with online content, instruction, and assessment. This "blend" enable teachers to have more opportunities for small group and even one-on-one instruction and students to have more control over the pace and path of their learning.

Over the next eighteen months, we will have the support of two Fuse Fellows, Dawn Manchester and Heather Neil, as we work to improve the learning experiences of Johnston students through the use of technology. Dawn is a sixth grade teacher at Lippit Elementary in Warwick and Heather is an Elementary Technology Integration Specialist in Woonsocket.

Blended learning is a way to increase the impact great teachers have on students. We know that many are already experimenting with blended learning models and strategies in your classrooms. We also know that others may be apprehensive about a shift toward blended learning. We understand this and are committed to supporting teachers with all levels of comfort and experience to move forward in their use of technology. Blended learning is a way to increase the impact of great teachers on students.

Just as we are encouraging teachers to harness the power of technology in their classrooms, we are striving to rethink models for teacher support by using digital tools to enhance and personalize the professional development opportunities we offer.

To that end, Dawn and Heather will be designing a monthly playlist for Johnston educators about various aspects of blended learning. A playlist is a compilation of online resources (videos, articles, websites, etc.) that they can peruse at your own pace throughout the month.

I look forward to the exciting work that will happen as a result of this support.
